The Human Rights Defender's unannounced visit to the persons detained following the Ijevan events

The representatives of the Human Rights Defender made unannounced visits to Armavir and Vardashen penitentiary institutions, had private interviews with 10 persons detained in connection with the Ijevan events.

During the interviews, persons deprived of their liberty raised questions related to criminal proceedings and charges. In particular, they claimed that there was no evidence in the criminal case that proved the alleged crime, and the allegations were groundless. Moreover, they noted that the charges against them were based on an uncertain testimony of one person, a police officer.

As was already presented in the previous statement, an examination was initiated with regard to ill-treatment by police officers during apprehensions. These issues were recorded in the previous statement of the Human Rights Defender.

During the visits, issues related to health condition of the persons deprived of liberty were also raised. The issues, based on their nature and necessity, were discussed with the administration of the penitentiary institutions, the advocates involved in the criminal proceedings or family members of persons deprived of liberty.

The Human Rights Defender's Office is in contact with the advocates of the detainees.

No complaints were raised about the conditions or treatment by the officers of Armavir and Vardashen penitentiary institutions.

The issues were summarized and additional letters were addressed to the Prosecutor's Office, Police and the Ministry of Justice.

Within the framework of the investigation, the Defender continues to undertake all necessary measures.
