The Human Rights Defender and the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe have emphasized the importance of the support for the implementation of the judicial reforms

Today, the Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan received a delegation headed by Ms. Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

 

During the meeting, the parties discussed issues concerning the Armenian judicial reforms, the fight against corruption in the judicial system, as well as Armenia-Council of Europe 2019-2022 Action Plan.

 

The Human Rights Defender noted that there are issues that require urgent solution in the judicial system. Particularly, there are problems related to the external and internal independence of the courts, the lack of citizens' trust towards judicial system, etc.

 

Arman Tatoyan has informed that these issues are under his daily attention and he is willing to support the Government and the National Assembly in implementing the reforms. He also prioritized the role of the civil society in all these processes and expressed his readiness to foster their participation.

 

The Human Rights Defender emphasized the essential role of the Council of Europe in the reforms and strengthening the rule of law in Armenia. Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni presented the directions of the Armenia-Council of Europe 2019-2022 Action Plan and highlighted the role of the Human Rights Defender in protection of human rights in the country. 

 

The parties expressed their readiness to continue the cooperation towards strengthening human rights in the country corresponding to the international commitments of Armenia.
