Joint and caring efforts are necessary for ensuring the rights of persons with disabilities: The Defender

A number of achievements are accumulated in the field of ensuring the rights of persons with disabilities, but certain problems still exist. This statement was made by the Defender during the discussion organized by the Coalition for Inclusive Legal Reforms. Representative of state bodies, international, and civil organizations also attended the event.

The Defender highlighted the importance of joint and caring efforts during the discussion dedicated to the adoption and implementation of RA Law “On the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and their Social Inclusion” following the spirit of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

“It is important to ensure accessibility of the physical environment. The roads and buildings are not yet appropriately designed for persons with disabilities. Accessibility of the physical environment is often limited to the existence of curb ramps, without taking into consideration all the categories of disabilities. The right of children with disabilities to live in a family is also important”, said Arman Tatoyan in his speech.

Complaints received by the Defender’s Office evidence to the fact that there are issues in the field of defining the level of disability.

It is to be mentioned that with the adoption of RA Law “On the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and their Social Inclusion,” the Defender will be authorized to carry out monitoring on the implementation of UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities and the state of protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.
