The Defender’s representatives have visited Nubarashen penitentiary institution regarding the open letter addressed to the Defender

Today, the Deputy Human Rights Defender and Doctor of Defender’s staff made an unannounced visit to Nubarashen Penitentiary Institution, met with detained Gagik Mikaelyan and examined his detention conditions, in connection with the open letter of Gagik Mikayelyan’s mother, Anahit Pogosyan addressed to RA Human Rights Defender on 3 May.

The representatives of the Defender recorded that the cell where G. Mikaelyan is kept is overcrowded and detention conditions do not meet the requirements of the law.

Considering the revealed violations, the Human Rights Defender started a discussion procedure on his own initiative and in connection with the latter will apply to the Ministry of Justice to take immediate measures for ensuring accommodation and sleep conditions prescribed by the law for every person kept in that cell.

During the visit medical documents concerning G. Mikaelyan’s health condition were examined, and for ensuring appropriate medical care for him, a written request was sent to the Ministry of Justice.

During the private conversation, efficient means for the protection of G. Mikayelyan’s rights and necessary consultation regarding the issues raised in the open letter were presented to him.
