The Defender’s representatives examined the detention conditions of prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment

On January 26, 2017, representatives of Torture and Ill-treatment Prevention Department of RA Human Rights Defender’s Office made a special unannounced visit to Armavir penitentiary institution of RA Ministry of Justice.

The purpose of the visit was to examine the conditions of detention facilities of persons who had been transferred from ''Nubarashen'' penitentiary and were sentenced to life imprisonment, as well as have private conversations with them. The documents relating to them have also been examined.

During the visit, the persons sentenced to life imprisonment raised a series of questions. Part of the questions were discussed and solved with the administration of the penitentiary institution on the spot. Based on the above mentioned persons’ complaints, a written procedure was initiated by the Human Rights Defender, and clarifications have been required from respective State authorities.
